Taverne Tour

Two large scale posters promoting the Taverne Tour music festival are pasted to a cement wall. A black and white image of a woman is shown holding up an LP record in front of her face, obscuring it from view. A deep blue-green wave-like texture covers the background of the image while swirling decorative elements in deep yellow and sea green radiate below and behind the figure. The location and logo are shown across the top, while the logos of the festival sponsors are displayed along the bottom. The festival name, Taverne Tour, is displayed to the right of the woman in a large off-kilter font.

Project

For this student project, I was tasked with designing a poster, schedule and tickets for a local Montreal festival of my choice.

The Taverne Tour is a two-day festival that takes place in February and features a series of musical acts at small venues along three of Montréal’s busiest intersecting streets.

The musical genres featured are diverse, but include a number of groups who describe their sound as surreal, art-pop, dream-pop, avant-garde, experimental, hip hop, psych/garage/rock, psych/prog/rock, scifi/drone/metal, among others.

The Taverne Tour promotional poster is shown as a large-scale bus stop ad. It is evening and the poster is backlit.

Concept

The Taverne Tour includes many musical acts that draw on psychedelia and surrealism in their sound. As I assembled the mood board, I kept this in mind as I tried to find images that suggest subconscious forces. Some images represent faces that are obscured or hidden.

For the colour palette I drew on the colours of both deep space and the ocean, two subjects that evoke immense unseen forces. The dark hues also fit well with the dark winter timing of the festival and its past visuals.

I played with several decorative fonts influenced by psychedelia before settling on Lisbeth Display. The result is a deep and moody tone and the theme “hidden forces”.

This is the mood board that I produced as I began the process of designing the graphics for the Montreal music festival Taverne Tour. The mood board includes images of planets, churning oceans, and deep space alongside images of people with their faces obscured or warped. The theme of 'hidden forces' is described in the center of the board, reading: "Music is felt, not seen. This festival takes place in the dark winter month of February. The theme touches on the dark times we are living through and the force that compels us to gather and celebrate with music, in spite of the hidden dangers this entails."
Three tickets for the Taverne Tour are displayed on a light grey surface. As in the other promotional materials, a deep yellow circle is placed against a deep blue-green sea.

Schedule

For the festival schedule, I designed a four-panel brochure. The inside displays the shows in chronological order, divided over two days. The fundamental information of artist, location and time are easily picked out and clearly separated by text styling. The exterior of the brochure displays contact information and festival sponsors.

A striking recent photo of Jupiter forms the center of the brochure and ties into the overall theme with its surface of churning gases suggesting a dynamic process happening below.

A symmetrical design creates a sense of clarity and order, making information easy to find.

Two copies of the festival schedule brochure for the Taverne Tour music festival are shown against a grey background. The front of the program shows the festival title in a large striking font along with the main sponsor and festival logo. The deep blue-green ocean backdrop that is found in the other promotional materials is also present here.
A mockup of the interior view of the Taverne Tour music festival brochure is shown. The planet Jupiter sits in the center. The two left panels display the information about the Friday night concerts and the two right panels show information for the Saturday night shows.
This is a mockup of the exterior of the accordion-fold brochure for the Montreal music festival Taverne Tour. The scheule is shown completely unfolded. The contact information and sponsors can be seen along with the image of a woman's face that has been slightly warped.
